DES MOINES - Finishing with the best 1,500 meter run time of his young career, 14-year-old Santa Maria track standout Joe Domingues of Santa Maria placed third at the AAU Junior Olympic Games at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.
Domingues finished in a time of 4 minutes, 19.74 seconds, beating his previous time of 4:24.02. The soon-to-be eighth grader is now a Junior All-American. Domingues has already won the 1,500 in the California State Games and AAU Regional Championships this track season.
Domingues spoke with KSBY's Travis Clark earlier this month about winning his toughest competition to date, his battle with cancer. Domingues is a survivor of Non Hodgkin's Lymphoma after being diagnosed in 2011.
