Santa Maria schools celebrate Dr. Suess

Sunday is Doctor Suess' birthday and Friday, elementary schools in Santa Maria celebrated the beloved author.

Every year, schools around the United States celebrate Read Across America to honor Dr. Suess.

Since Dr. Suess' birthday falls on the weekend this year, many schools celebrated early on Friday.

Airmen from Vandenberg Air Force Base and Santa Maria police officers read to students at Rice Elementary School.

Gayle Vyenielo, teacher at Rice Elementary School, told KSBY, "We're showing them the importance of school to further their careers into becoming members of our community, and not only members of our community but contributing members of our community."

The theme of this year's Read Across America Day is "Sink Your Teeth Into Good Books All Year Long."

Other school districts will celebrate on Monday.
