Santa Maria schools were all placed on lockdown just before 1:30 p.m. Thursday as a precautionary measure.

Santa Maria Police assisted the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office in chasing a vehicle believed to be driven by a robbery suspect.

Police say during the lockdown, a child at Fesler Elementary School contacted a family member. The family member misinterpreted the student as saying they were on lockdown because a man was on campus with a gun. The family member contacted the police who secured the perimeter surrounding the campus. The police did not find a gunman and talked with the student who had placed the call.

Police want to stress that at no time was there any danger to the students.
