The Department of Defense announced Sunday that a soldier from Santa Maria was killed in action in Afghanistan.
Officials say 23-year-old Spc. Kenneth Clifford Alvarez was killed on August 23 in Haft Asiab, Afghanistan.
His unit was attacked by enemy forces with an improvised explosive device.
He and one other person, 20-year-old Pvt. Jonathon Michael Dean Hostetter of Missouri, were killed.
Both soldiers were part of the 2nd Engineer Battalion, 36th Engineer Brigade, White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico.
