The 20th annual Santa Maria Valley Men's Amateur Championship opened on Saturday at the Rancho Maria Golf Club.
This year's field includes 58 players, who range from collegiate golfers to locals to out-of-towners.
The two-day tournament includes 36 holes of stroke play. There is a scratch flight and two handicap flights.
Defending champion Matthew Sobczak shot a 2-under 70 in the opening round. Former champion Justin Warthen carded a 2-over 74, while three-time champion Ramie Sprinkling of Camarillo fired a 75.
Hitching Post owner Bill Ostini carded a 3-under 69, which went for a net score of 65 because of his 4 handicap.
The tournament ends Sunday with a 9 a.m. shotgun start.
