Thomas Huddle started a flood of early goals for the Santa Ynez High boys water polo team on Thursday. The Pirates built an early 6-2 lead after the first quarter and held on to beat Oxnard 8-6 in the first round of the CIF Division 6 playoffs.
The game was played at Righetti High School.
Huddle scored all three of his goals in the opening quarter. Eric Illes, James Billington and Karl Fredrickson each scored once in the first quarter. Andrew Imani added one goal in the second quarter to give the Pirates a 7-2 at halftime.
Antonio Barre scored the Pirates' final goal of the game in the third quarter as Oxnard cut the deficit to 8-4 after the third period and added two more goals in the fourth quarter.
The Los Padres League champion Pirates play on the road in Saturday's second round at either #1 seeded Malibu, which beat Xavier Prep 11-3 on Thursday.
Santa Ynez lost a heartbreaker in the CIF semifinals last season.
The Cabrillo boys water polo team fell 14-6 at Temescal Canyon on Thursday to end its season.
