Santa Ynez youth baseball team wins National Championship

A 12 year old team based in Santa Ynez won the National Youth Baseball Championship in Memphis, Tennessee. The Santa Ynez Titans have a player from Santa Ynez, two from San Luis Obispo, one from Goletta and one from Santa Barbara in addition to seven players from outside the Central Coast. The Titans are coached by David Lawrence from Santa Ynez.

The team won the National Championship on Monday night by beating fellow California team BPA DeMarini, 12-2. It was the Titans 100th game of the summer, they went 74-25-1 playing all over the country.

San Luis Obispo's Cooper Benson hit two home runs in the championship game and had four for the tournament to earn MVP honors. Benson hit a game tying home run in the 6th inning of the semifinal game to set up a walk off single by Brandon Lawrence in extra innings. Lawrence is the son of David.

The Titans are a traveling baseball team, not a Little League team. Traveling baseball plays on a bigger field with the bases further a part. The Little League World Series finished up on Sunday with a team from Japan beating Chula Vista, California in the championship. The Little League World Series is for players aged 11-13.
