Cal Poly and Righetti High School graduate Kristina Santiago flew to China on Tuesday. The two time Big West player of the year will play for Team USA in exhibition games against Olympic teams. With the actual Team USA players playing in the WNBA right now, Santiago along with other recent college grads are filling in. "Just the experience of going to China, that's a place I've always been interested in and curious about " said Santiago who jumped at the chance to play on the team.
When Santiago gets back from China she'll start focusing on her professional career. She recently signed with a team in Bulgaria after coming close to signing with teams in Israel and Switzerland. "This offer from Bulgaria came up which had me really excited because it was a Euro Cup team. Which means we not only play teams in the country but we travel all over Europe to play other countries too."
Santiago will play for a team in Dunav Ruse in Ruse, Bulgaria. The team won the Bulgarian League championship last season. Santiago will room with the other American on the team. In addition to her salary, Santiago will get free food, lodging and a personal driver from the team. The season starts in September and runs through March.
Santiago still has a dream of playing in the WNBA but knows she will have to market herself overseas first. "From now on I want to build myself up. Play in as many competitive league's as I can. Try and get those championships. Whether I keep playing overseas, I'll keep playing as long as my body can take it. If a WNBA opportunity comes up I would definitely see if that would work out" said Santiago.
Santiago is 6'2" tall, she played center in college but expects to play power forward and small forward as a pro.
