Santa Barbara County Sheriff deputies are investigating a homicide near Guadalupe Beach.
The Sheriff's Office says a body was found at about 6:30 a.m. Tuesday on the side of the road just off Main Street. The location is about a half mile from the Guadalupe Beach Dunes.
Investigators have identified the body, described only as a heavy-set Hispanic person, as that of a Santa Barbara County resident. They have not released a name.
Just after 6:30 a.m., Eduardo Gutierrez was getting ready for a typical day of working in the Betteravia Farm fields.
"We were just driving by and we just see one of our co-workers stop, and he just let us know that there's a dead body up ahead," said Gutierrez. "And we just kind of stopped."
Gutierrez says his co-worker had already flagged down a driver and had the person call 9-1-1. Still in shock, Gutierrez kept his distance from the body and said he didn't want to get involved.
"I don't know. We couldn't really think much," said Gutierrez. "We just didn't know what it could be. We didn't know if it was sleeping or anything like that but he wasn't moving at all. So we had to kind of assume."
Officers and paramedics arrived on scene a short time later.
"I think it's just sad, I mean, it's just very, he has a family," said Gutierrez. "You know, to be just left there in the dirt, I mean it's just not right."
Gutierrez says he didn't see anything suspicious in the area when he got off work at 5:30 p.m. on Monday.
The roadway near the beach was closed for several hours for the investigation.
Early during the investigation on Tuesday, a Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office spokesperson said the body was that of a male, but later only referred to the victim as a "person."
