The Santa Barbara County Fire Department rescued a man from Santa Cruz Island on Sunday.
The call came in around 2:00 PM, for a man experiencing chest pains.
Fire officials say he had been kayaking in the Smuggler's Cove area and started having trouble when the wind picked up.
Crews transported him to Cottage Hospital by helicopter.
As the helicopter was returning to base, it was re-routed to Santa Barbara Canyon for a small brush fire.
Fire officials say the blaze, to the southwest of the Highways 166 and 33 interchange, was sparked by lightning.
