Seventy-one inmates in the Santa Barbara County Jail system were released Monday. The release came as part of new state guidelines designed to reduce prison overcrowding in California's state prisons. Under those guidelines, inmates are given more credit for good behavior.
Twenty-two inmates were released from the Santa Barbara County Jail when the rules went into effect Monday. Another 49 inmates in the jail's Alternative Sentencing program were let go from Electronic Monitoring and the Sheriff's Work Alternative Program. The new requirements do not apply to violent felons or registered sex offenders.
By the end of the month, the County Jail expects to release a total of 128 inmates (50 from the Jail and 78 from Alternative Sentencing).
