SB DA's office believes there are more victims in local child pornography case

A 25-year-old Santa Maria man is charged with multiple counts of child pornography and the Santa Barbara County District Attorney thinks there may be even more victims involved. There is only one victim identified at this time.

Childers was arrested in July after the 12-year-old girl's family found video cameras in different locations in their home, including the child's bedroom and bathroom.

Childers is charged with possession of child pornography and attempted possession of child pornography. He's also charged with first degree burglary on 13 of the 24 counts.

The felony complaint says he started entering the girl's home from March 2012 to July 2013.

Deputy District Attorney Jennifer Karapetian says Childers knew the victim and her family.

"In a lot of sexual assault cases, it's extremely common that the perpetrator knows the victims. They are familiar with their families, and slowly but surely, develop a relationship with the victims and the crime increases in seriousness," said Karapetian.

Karapetian says she hopes by showing the suspect's photo, it will encourage other victims to come forward. She says they believe he has contacted other underage girls on the internet.

Investigators ask anyone with information to call Corporal Steve Best with the Santa Maria Police Department at 928-3781, ext 491.

Childers is being held in jail on $300,000 bail.

His next court appearance is August 29th.
