Molly Schlemer and Jonae Ervin both recorded double-doubles and Ariana Elegado scored a game-high 23 points to lead the Cal Poly women's basketball team to an 84-71 win in Mott Gym over Loyola Marymount on Thursday night. The win snapped a two-game losing skid by the Mustangs, who improved to 6-5 on the season. The Lions fell to 6-6.
Elegado drained her first four shots of the game, three of which were three-pointers, to help Cal Poly take a 42-30 lead into halftime. Elegado, who had 20 of her 23 points in the first half, finished 6 of 9 from long distance and 8 for 13 from the floor overall.
Schlemer, a Righetti High graduate, made 7 of her 15 shots to finish with 14 points in 22 minutes. She pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds, 6 were on the offensive end. Jonae Ervin came off the bench to finish with 15 points, 6 rebounds and a season-high 11 assists. Caroline Reeves just missed a double-double with 11 rebounds, 8 points and 5 assists.
Cal Poly shot 43 percent from the field and hit 7 of its 15 three-pointers for a 47% clip. The Mustangs pulled down 54 rebounds to LMU's 49. The Lions recorded 13 steals and forced 15 Cal Poly turnovers. Cal Poly hit 15 of its 18 free throw attempts to finish at 83%.
LMU made just 2 of its 14 three-point shots and shot 31% overall for the game. Alex Cowling led the Lions with 16 points.
The women open Big West Conference play on January 3 at Long Beach State. The Mustangs are the two-time defending regular season champions of the Big West.
