While more than half of school counselors say they have helped survivors of dating violence, nearly all say they had no training to help them treat those students.
The study published in the journal Pediatrics finds 80% of schools did not have a protocol in place to respond to dating violence.
Most counselors called parents or police when a student reported an incident.
