Investigators have started digging along Highway 101 in search of a little girl's remains. Ramona Price disappeared from Santa Barbara in 1961 and police now suspect she was one of many victims of serial killer Mack Ray Edwards. Edwards confessed to killing more than 20 children before he killed himself on death row in San Quentin in 1971.
Cadaver dogs found an area of interest while sniffing around the now partially demolished Hollister Street Bridge in Goleta last Wednesday. On Tuesday police brought in a different set of cadaver dogs to help narrow their search. The dogs are trained not to react to animal remains, just human remains. The dogs smell the process of decomposition in the soil, not bones.
Nothing has been found as of Tuesday night but police believe if they do find remains, they can solve the cold case of Price, who disappeared in September of 1961.
Edwards was a heavy equipment operator who worked on freeway construction along the 101 around the time of Price's disappearance.
"In researching Mr. Edwards and the fact that he was here during the construction of this project. The fact that he had bragged about killing and burying some of his victims beneath freeways led us to start searching the area with cadaver dogs" says Santa Barbara Police Lieutenant Paul McCaffrey.
Police have scraped away about three feet of dirt in a small area and will continue to dig over the next several days if they can't find remains. Police say the search is worth it to bring closure to the family of Ramona Price and to hopefully solve a case. The extraction is not effecting travel on the 101.
