San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's officials say bad sea conditions are making it difficult to search for the Cal Poly student who went missing in the water near Spooners Cove.
They say their diving and coastal search and rescue efforts have been put on hold until surf conditions improve.
Officials will continue searching the open ocean by helicopter.
Cal Poly President Jeffrey Armstrong sent an email to students Saturday morning announcing the incident.
In his email, he told students that 21-year-old Stefan Wagner, a biomedical engineering major from Fresno, went missing in the waters off Montana de Oro and has been declared dead.
The university is on summer break, but Armstrong assured students that counseling is still available, and school officials can even help students find counseling services closer to home.
Students can call (805) 756-2511 to learn more about the services available to them.
