Search warrant served in Nipomo for cockfighting allegations

Deputies from the San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Offices served a search warrant at a rural property in Nipomo Friday morning. It was part of an investiation into an alleged cockfighting operation.
The deputies were assisted by the San Luis Obispo County Department of Animal Services.
The property is located in the 1400 block of Orchard Road. Deputies say they discovered two hidden compounds containing 233 caged roosters.
Evidence collected at the scene suggested the roosters were raised and kept for the purpose of fighting.
Possession of birds with the intent to use them in fighting exhibitions is a misdemeanor punishable by 6 months in county jail along with a possible fine of up to $10,000.
Deputies collected the 233 roosters as evidence and are continuing to investigate and identify the suspects responsible.
