The California Highway Patrol says two people died from injuries sustained in a hit and run accident in Shandon Saturday.
Officials say a 68-year-old woman and 69-year-old man from Bakersfield were killed. They were driving in a 2012 Nissan Versa on State Route 46.
According to the California Highway Patrol, 38-year-old Vicente Muniz Montes from Shandon was driving a 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee on the eastbound side of the road, approaching McMillan Canyon. 27-year-old Florencio Ochoa Rojas was a passenger in the Jeep.
Officials say Montes was driving under the influence and made a turn directly in front of the Nissan Versa. The driver of the Nissan Versa wasn't able to avoid the accident and crashed into the Jeep. A Toyota that was also on the road then rear-ended the Jeep.
The 68-year-old woman who was a passenger in the Nissan died at the scene.
The driver of the Nissan was airlifted to a local hospital where he later died.
Montes and Rojas ran away from the scene of the accident. The California Highway Patrol and San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Office searched Shandon for the two men. Eventually, they found them and arrested both of them.
There was already a warrant out for Montes's arrest because he failed to appear in court after getting a DUI earlier this year.
Officials haven't identified the two people that died, pending notification of next-of-kin.
