Many are weighing in as to whether a proposed mosque should be built near Ground Zero in New York.
On Wednesday, Senator Barbara Boxer addressed that issue with KSBY News.
The Democrat, who is seeking her fourth term in Washington, made a campaign stop in Santa Barbara.
Senator Boxer made clear she believes the controversial issue should be decided locally.
She said, "I support 100-percent whatever the people of New York decide."
Boxer's challenger is former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina.
The Republican made a statement to the press on Tuesday.
Fiorina said, "The President was wrong in suggesting this issue was about freedom of religion. This issue is not about the freedom of religion."
But on Wednesday, Fiorina's campaign issued a statement to KSBY News that she believes it is a local issue to be decided by New Yorkers.
