The Santa Barbara County Public Health Department has closed Goleta Beach in response to a major sewage spill.
Officials say about 800 gallons of sewage spilled at the west end of the Goleta Beach parking lot Wednesday afternoon. A portion of the untreated sewage flowed into the ocean.
As a result, Goleta Beach has been closed to beachgoers for 400 yards on either side of the spill area. Health officials have posted signs so residents know that the area is closed.
Water samples are being taken Thursday and we should know by Friday if the water is safe.
Health officials also note that the public should wait about ten days to harvest any shellfish from that area. Because they are filter-feeders they may ingest some of the contaminated waters.
