INDIO, Calif. (AP) The Riverside County Sheriff's Department says a sexually violent predator has been returned to a state mental hospital after violating the terms of his release while traveling in the Coachella Valley.

Sheriff's Capt. Dan Wilman says Steven Joseph Willett was taken into custody Tuesday after surveillance showed that the 57-year-old violated the terms of his court-ordered conditional release.

Under the agreement, Willett is not allowed to contact or date women. Wilman says Willet contacted an undercover female sheriff's deputy at a Coachella Valley bus stop, followed her onto the bus and tried to encourage her to come back to his residence in Desert Center.

Willett was declared a sexually violent predator in 1997.
