SF school board approves nearly 900 pink slips

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - San Francisco school officials have voted to send out pink slips to nearly 900 teachers and administrators, and this time Superintendent Carlos Garcia says some of them will eventually be let go.
The school board approved the layoff notices Tuesday to help plug an expected $113 million budget deficit over the next two years.
Teachers must be informed whether they will be laid off by March 15, a state-imposed deadline. District officials say as their budget situation becomes clearer, they hope to rescind many of the pink slips.
Last year, all of the 500 layoff notices were taken back after the district found additional funding.
But Garcia says the financial situation this year is dire, and there will be some layoffs. The district, which serves 55,000 students, is facing steep reductions in state funding.
