After competing in four events on Friday, Sharon Day was in 18th place entering Saturday's final three events in the heptathlon. The former Cal Poly star was able to move up two spots in the final events to finish 16th with 6,232 points. Jessica Ennis of Great Briton won the gold with 6,955 points followed by Lilli Schwarzkopf of Germany (6,649 points) and Russia's Tatyana Chernova (6,628 points). Day was the top U.S. finisher.
In the second day of competition, Day fouled on her first attempt at the long jump and posted a mark of 19-feet, 1.5-inches on her second. Her third and final attempt of 19-feet, 2.5-inches was her best and scored her 804 points, 25th overall.
The second event was the javelin. Day thew her second attempt 144-feet which earned her 742 points, 22nd best in the 39 person field.
In the competitions final event, the 800 meters, Day ran a personal best 2:11.31 for 946 points. She had the seventh fastest time overall.
Day competed in the high jump during the 2008 Olympics, finishing 12th. After Beijing she turned her attention to the seven-event heptathlon. She qualified for Team USA with a third place finish at the U.S. Olympic Trials.
Day is 27 years old and lives in San Luis Obispo.
