San Luis Obispo's Sharon Day sits in 18th place out of 39 women after four events in the women's heptathlon at the London Olympics. The former Cal Poly All-American earned 3,740 points and set two new personal-bests on the opening day of track and field events at Olympic Stadium.
Day ran a personal-best in the first event, the 100 meter hurdles, with a time of 13.57 seconds to earn 1,040 points. Her time ranked 22nd in the field of 38.
Jennifer Ennis of Great Britain won with a new heptathlon world record time of 12.54 seconds.
Sharon struggled in the morning's second event, the high jump, which is what she qualified in for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Day cleared 5 feet, 7 1/3 inches on her second attempt and cleared 5-10.667 on her third attempt. Day could not clear 6 feet and received 978 points.
Austra Skujyte cleared 6-3.6 to win the event. Day's season-best jump coming into the meet was 6-1.6, while her career-best was 6-4.75.
Friday's final two events, the shot put and 200 meter run, took place during the evening session. Day tied a career-best in the shot put with a mark of 46 feet, 10 inches for 813 points. Her effort took her from 21st in the standings to 17th overall headed into the final event of the day.
Sharon ran the 200 meter dash in a time of 24.36 seconds to receive 946 points.
Ennis leads with 4,158 points.
Beijing Silver medalist and American Hyleas Fountain is fifth overall with 3,902 points. Fountain won the U.S. Olympic Trials, edging Day, who finished second with a career-high 4,343 points.
The final three events, the long jump, javelin throw and 800 meter run are on Saturday.
