GALT, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say a police officer in the Sacramento County city of Galt has been shot and killed.

Sheriff's Sgt. Jason Ramos says the shooting occurred a little after 11:20 a.m. Tuesday after police responded to reports of a burglary.

An officer contacted a man who was about a block and a half away near railroad tracks. Ramos says during an ensuring altercation, the suspect pulled a handgun and shot at two officers.

One of the officers was struck and died. The other was not hit.

The suspect also died. Ramos says it's not clear whether he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound or was shot by police.

Neither the suspect nor the officer who died has been identified.
