Measure S was defeated and now the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office is looking for another solution to the growing problem of jail overcrowding.

It would have created a half-cent sales tax to build a new jail in the northern part of the county.

It would have also paid for fire and public safety improvements.

Around 60 percent of voters voted against it.

Two-thirds approval was required for Measure S to pass.

Drew Sugars, PIO, said, "It was not the kind of election in which you would see a lot of support for a tax increase. There may be another point where people might be able to handle that."

Sugars also says the sheriff's office will be evaluating what people found favorable about Measure S and what they didn't.
