Shots fired after man armed with rifle enters Georgia elementary school

(NBC News) A young man is in custody after entering an Atlanta area elementary school, taking office staff members hostage and firing at police.

Students at the Ronald McNair Discovery Learning Academy in Decatur were escorted to the back of the school grounds for safety as dozens of law enforcement agents scoured the campus after the incident in the front office.

Police say 20 year old Michael Brandon Hill, dressed in dark clothing and carrying an AK 47 assault rifle, slipped past a buzzer security system and into the school by following behind someone authorized to enter.

As police arrived Hill left the office, firing at least half a dozen rounds at responding officers.

When police fired back Hill dropped to the ground and surrendered.
