The Disney musical, "Shrek," lights up the PAC in San Luis Obispo for its first performance, tonight.
It's a princess fairy tale, but the princess isn't your average damsel in distress. Fiona is trapped in the tower, waiting and hoping to be rescued. But after 23 years, she's understandably anxious.
Tabatha Skanes plays Fiona in the Kelrick prodution.
"The dragon can be seen from our window, fighting the knights that are trying to get to us," she explains, "...and we're ...it's like we're so close and then it's not there... like... myrrh. It's that classic ...Disney princess, where it's very proper and very elegant, and then it's... she's got this tomboy in her that's got to break out."
Erik Austin directs the show, but also plays the villain, "Farquaad."
"Shrek is rescuing Fiona for Farquaad, so that he can become king and Shrek can get his swamp back," Austin explains.
When Shrek does finally make it past the dragon to rescue Fiona, he's not what she expected... and Skanes says, that's exactly the point.
"It isn't until she knows who her true love is, that she actually finds what beautiful means," she says with a smile.
Austin agrees. "One of the big messages is, let your freak flag fly. You should be proud of who you are, no matter who, or what you are."
Skanes nods. "Just be yourself... is really the most beautiful thing about this show, being who you are."
"Shrek the Musical" plays at the PAC this weekend and next.
Some of the proceeds will benefit "Big Brothers, Big Sisters of San Luis Obispo County."
