Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center is named as San Luis Obispo County's designated trauma center.

The County Board of Supervisors approved the contract at this afternoon's meeting.

Sierra Vista's designation as a level-three trauma center means patients with life-threatening traumatic injuries will be taken directly to the San Luis Obispo hospital.

In the next few weeks, the hospital will have in place an organized system for short and long term trauma care.

County Emergency Services expects 350-400 patients to be treated at the center every year.

Back in 2010, Arroyo Grande Community Hospital fought the move stating the majority of the county's traumatic injuries take place at the Oceano dunes and Lake Nacimiento and that the injured should be taken to the nearest hospitals, Arroyo Grande Community Hospital and Twin Cities Community hospital, respectively.
