Six Cal Poly football players participated in a NFL Pro Day held on campus on Wednesday. Scouts from the Oakland Raiders and the San Diego Chargers sent the Mustangs through drills for 90 minutes.
Slotback Deonte Williams turned in the fastest 40 yard time of 4.52 seconds. Wide receiver Brandon Michalkiewicz ranked second at 4.61 and cornerback Nico Molino ranked third at 4.63.
"I did what I needed to do. I ran a good 40 and I'm satisfied with it and just to show the scouts I can move, you know. So I'm definitely all smiles right now," said Williams after going through the drills. He allso tied for the best time in the short shuttle run of 4.40 seconds. Williams earned Second Team All-America honors after rushing for 1,506 yards, 72 yards shy of the school record, and 12 touchdowns last fall. He took part in the Casino Del Sol All-Star game recently in Arizona.
Quarterback Andre Broadous was also pleased with his efforts on Wednesday. He ran the 40 in 4.71. "I'm feeling good. So far, I've been getting looked at at quarterback, slot, running back, safety. So we'll see how it goes. I have a private tryout with a CFL team in April. I'm open to anything," said Broadous, who took part in the Beyond Sports Network Collegiate Showcase last weekend in Ohio. He threw for 1,375 yards and 18 touchdowns, while rushing for 500 yards and 9 scores his senior season.
Linebacker Kennith Jacson was clocked at 4.74 in the 40 yard dash. "You always want to improve with whatever it is you're doing. But when you go out there and you feel like you gave it your best and you really try to do the best you can. That's all you can ask for so I'm really happy about that," said Jackson.
Michalkiewicz was the top performer in the 60 yard shuttle run (11.71 seconds), short shuttle 3.30 seconds) and vertical jump. Fullback Quinton Greenlaw logged the best standing broad jump at 9 feet, 9 inches.
The NFL Draft is April 25-27 in New York and will be televised on the NFL Network. Five Mustangs have been drafted in the last seven years, including cornerback Asa Jackson last April. Jackson attended the Pro Day on Wednesday to support his former teammates, give them some advice and just enjoy being back home.
Cal Poly opens 2013 Spring Drills on April 10 with the annual Spring Game set for Saturday May 4.
