Six new police officers join the Santa Maria Police Department

Santa Maria Police Chief Ralph Martin introduced six new police officers at a ceremony on Monday at the Santa Maria Public Library. Chief Martin called the group of recruits "the best of the best" as their families were on hand to pin new badges on the officers. The officers include Andres Lopez who told KSBY, "After college, it became my primary goal. I just wanted to serve and help the community and dedicate myself to service." Another ten officers will start training in January. The chief hopes to have a total of thirty-six new officers on the SMPD force by the end of 2014.
