Sky lantern sparks second fire in same area

CAL FIRE says a sky lantern caused a small brush fire in the Pirates Cove area near Avila Beach on Monday.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire to a quarter-acre.

It burned in the same area where a sky lantern sparked a fire last summer. That fire burned several acres and came close to radio and cell phone towers.

Last month, the San Luis Obispo County Board of Supervisors passed an ordinance prohibiting the use of sky lanterns in unincorporated parts of the county.
