The San Luis Obispo Blues took the rubber game of a weekend California Collegiate League series at the home of the MLB Academy Barons on Sunday with a 5-2 win.
The Blues improved to 25-12 overall and 14-8 in the CCL standings. They remain half a game behind first place Santa Barbara, which is 14-7 in league. The defending national champion Foresters open a key three-game series at Sinsheimer Stadium against the Blues on Tuesday night.
The Blues struck twice in the top of the second inning on a sacrifice fly from Alex Detz and a run-scoring single from Cody Dufrene. The Barons tied it 2-2 in the bottom half.
SLO took the lead for good in the fourth on a basehit from Tanner Donnels that scored Austin Grisham. Brandon Carr scored on a passed ball in the fifth to give the Blues a 4-2 lead. Donnels added an insurance run in the eighth when he tripled and scored on a wild pitch.
The Blues recorded 8 hits in the win led by Grisham and Donnels, who had 2 apiece.
Dylan Munger earned the win. He allowed 2 unearned runs and 6 hits in 5 innings. He struck out 8. Parker Ray fanned 4 in 2 perfect innings of relief. Chad Girodo and Chase Green finished off the win with one scoreless inning each.
The Blues and Foresters play Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday night at 6pm.
Also on Sunday, the San Luis Obispo Rattlers beat the High Desert Heat 4-1. The North County Indians split a doubleheader with the California Wahoos by dropping the opener 6-3 and taking the nightcap 8-3.
