A six-run first inning gave the Blues the lead for good as San Luis Obispo returned home to crush the Cal Poly Club baseball team 17-4 Thursday night in Sinsheimer Stadium.
The Blues improved to 3-2 on the season after collecting 17 hits to Cal Poly's 5.
San Luis Obispo High graduate and Cuesta pitcher Sean Mullen earned the win for the Blues. He scattered 2 hits, 2 runs and 4 walks in 5 innings. The right-hander struck out 6. Robbie Rivera and Cody Dufrene combined to pitch the final four innings. Dufrene slugged the club's first home run of the summer earlier in the game.
Six Blues were credited with two hits or more, including Dufrene, Matt Shortall and Austin Christensen, who each had 3. Dufrene hit a solo home run in the sixth inning and finished with 5 RBI. Shortall hit a two-run blast in the eighth to finish with 3 RBI. Nick Flair, Bryan Peters and Taylor Anderson had two hits apiece. Anderson and Austin Grisham each had 3 RBI.
The Blues return to California Collegiate League action Friday when the Conejo Oaks come to town at 6pm. The Blues beat the Oaks on Wednesday 7-1 in their league opener.
