The San Luis Obispo City Council approved its 2013 budget on Monday night, at just over $111 million dollars.
The council currently consists of only four members. Mayor Jan Marx and Councilmembers Kathy Smith and John Ashbaugh voted yes, and Councilman Dan Carpenter voted no.
One of the biggest issues was figuring out how many police officers should be devoted to patrolling solely the downtown area. Council decided to approve the option of hiring two new officers, who would patrol on bike and foot, officially starting January 2014. They took some resources from other departments, like city paving, street sweeping, and traffic signs.
