SLO County District 2 Supervisor candidates face off

The two candidates in the race for District Two Supervisor of San Luis Obispo County met tonight at a forum at the Morro Bay Veteran's Building. KSBY caught up with the two men earlier in the day.

Incumbent District Two Supervisor Bruce Gibson says his past 7½ years at the post have been a success. "We've been able to move the Los Osos sewer forward," he said. "We've put a library into Cambria in the midst of the worst economic times, and working with my colleagues on the board we've really had a lot of success in resizing county government."

His opponent, Director of the Cambria Community Services District Muril Clift, says otherwise. "I decided to run because all of the communities along the North Coast have severe infrastructure sewer water problems," he said. "And the current supervisor's absolute no growth policies has made it impossible to finance the repair of those infrastructures without excessive rates on the current residents."

Gibson and Clift say they'll focus on differing community projects if elected. "The riding area of the Nipomo Dunes and the dust that's affecting the air quality on the Nipomo Mesa, we're in the midst of that and we want to see that problem corrected," said Gibson. "We obviously have water as a major issue all through the county and we're going to be working not only on the drought issues that are this year and possibly next year, but also longer term solutions."

Clift said, "By the time I'm in office the sewer will be three-quarters finished. So what the concern would be is to find ways to reduce the cost to the people on that. A again from the standpoint of some type of sustainable development, lots of going after grants, maybe reduction in loan interest. So those kind of things would be helpful to those people."

It's been 4 years since the last race for SLO County District Two Supervisor. The June 3rd primary election will decide the winner.
