SLO County Sheriff's Office pays tribute to K9

The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Office held its first K9 memorial on Thursday.

A burial ceremony was held for Jake, a black Labrador retriever who died of cancer at the age of 12 in January of 2010.

Jake joined the Sheriff's Office in January of 2001. Deputy Allen Barger was his partner.

"Jake was a great dog," said Barger. "He was a very loving dog, very loyal. I couldn't start towards the back door without him running and skidding across the wood floors and almost hitting the door, wanting to go to work. He just loved to go to work every day."

Barger has a new K9 partner named Jack. He says Jack is a great partner, and while making the transition from having a well-trained, successful dog to working with a young, new dog has been difficult, it's been a good experience.
