San Luis Obispo High golfer Kush Sikand has scored a chance to dream opportunity. The soon-to-be junior with a 4.46 grade point average was one of eighty golfers picked worldwide from the First Tee program to play in next month's Nature Valley First Tee Open.
Sikand will play alongside a Champions Tour player at Pebble Beach in an event televised internationally on the Golf Channel.
Kush says he's most nervous and excited about one thing. "Probably being on television because you get to play in front of millions of people rather than the few people watching you," Sikand said. "My putting is pretty strong and my driving is too. My irons are a little shaky, but I'm working on it," he added.
Kush's younger sister Neha, who will be a freshman next year at SLO High, will be his caddie at the First Tee Open, which is July 6-8. 81 juniors, 81 Champions Tour players and 162 amateurs will compete for the title at Pebble Beach and Del Monte Golf Course.
The First Tee is a non-profit youth development organization that impacts the lives of young people with education programs and through the game of golf. Since its creation in 1997, The First Tee has introduced the game of golf and its values to more than 6.5 million people in all fifthy states and six international locations.
"I hope that he learns how to take his life skills as well as his golf skills and be a gentleman about it," said Terri Benson, the First Tee Program Director at Laguna Lake Golf Course in San Luis Obispo.
Vanessa Villa of Dos Pueblos High was also selected to play.
