SLO High's Jack Ferguson commits to Cal Poly football

Cal Poly football scores its second Class of 2013 recruit from the Central Coast. San Luis Obispo High linebacker Jack Ferguson said he verbally committed to the Mustangs during an official visit to campus over the weekend.

Ferguson chose the Mustangs over offers from other Big Sky Conference teams in Weber State, Eastern Washington and UC Davis. He said his hometown school felt like the perfect fit. "A big part of it was just spending a lot of quality time with the coaches and some of the other recruits. Right away I started to click with a bunch of the coaches and everybody else in the program. They just made it a real special opportunity for me. I just feel like they have some great things going over there and I'd like to be a part of it," said Ferguson, who owns a 4.2 grade point average. He said academics also played a role in his decision since he plans to major in business.

The 6-2, 245 pound Ferguson has been a dominant defensive force since his sophomore season with the Tigers. He recorded 101 tackles as a sophomore on varsity. His junior year he tallied 152 total tackles, 5.5 sacks and returned an interceptions for a 26 yard touchdown. He followed that up with 110 total tackles, 8 sacks and 19 quarterback hurries his senior season for the Tigers.

Ferguson was named All-CIF and the Pac 7 League's Most Outstanding Defensive Back in 2011 and 2012.

Ferguson joins Templeton High offensive lineman Ross Berry in Cal Poly's recruiting Class of 2013. Berry verbally committed to the Mustangs in July. Berry, a 6-4, 270 pound lineman, chose the Mustangs over offers from San Jose State, Nevada and Sacramento State. Berry earned All-CIF and All-Los Padres League honors in 2011 and 2012.

The national signing period opens February 6.
