San Luis Obispo native Jeff Powers is officially headed to the London Olympics. The 32 year old was one of 13 players named to the official USA Olympics Men's Water Polo Team on Monday.
The San Luis Obispo High graduate scored six goals in Beijing to help the Americans capture the Silver Medal in the 2008 Games.
"That's really the driving factor behind the team this year is a lot of the returners are coming back to go for that Gold because it kind of didn't sit very well with us not getting that Gold," said Powers."We feel confident we can. We have the right pieces, we have the right players and hopefully we can do it."
Powers also played for the USA in the 2004 Olympics.
The Americans are coached by Terry Schroeder, a Santa Barbara native, who won two medals as a player in the Olympics.
The U.S. Olympic Men's Water Polo Team will open competition at the 2012 Olympic Games against Montenegro on July 29. That is followed by a match against Romania on July 31, Great Britain on August 2, Serbia on August 4, and Hungary on August 6, to close out preliminary play in Group B. The quarterfinals are set for August 8, followed by the semifinals on August 10, and the medal round on August 12.
