San Luis Obispo native Jeff Powers scored two goals, but the U.S. men's water polo team lost to Spain 8-7 in the consolation bracket on Friday. Felipe Perrone Rocha scored his third goal of the game with under a minute to play to hand the Americans their fourth-straight loss.

The Americans, who are coached by Santa Barbara native Terry Schroeder, play Australia Sunday for seventh place, while Spain faces Hungary for fifth place.

The U.S. had high hopes going into London after winning a silver medal in Beijing. They won their first three preliminary stage games before losing to Serbia, Hungary, Croatia and Spain.

The Spaniards jumped out to an early 3-0 lead. Powers scored in the second quarter to make it a 3-2 game and again in the fourth quarter to bring the US to within one goal at 6-5. With his two goals, the 32 year old Powers has upped his total to 4 goals in London. He had 6 in Beijing.
