Former Cal Poly All-American Sharon Day sits in second place, while UCSB star Barbara Nwaba is in fourth after the first day of competition of the women's heptathlon at the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials on Friday at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.
Day, a San Luis Obispo resident, has a total of 3,797 points after four events. She trails leader Hyleas Fountain by 151 points. Chantae McMillian is third with 3,762 points. Nwaba is fourth with 3,736 points.
Day and Nwaba tied for first in the high jump. Each woman cleared 6 feet, 1.5 inches to earn 1,067 points. Nwaba set a new PR in the event by one inch. Nwaba earned 1,024 points in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 13.68 seconds, while Day was clocked in 13.71 seconds for 1,021 points.
Day, the 2011 USA Outdoor heptathlon champion, finished fourth in the shot put with a top throw of 43-11.5, which was good for 754 points. Nwaba, the NCAA runner-up in the heptathlon this month, came in seventh with a toss of 41-1.5 for 696 points.
The final event of the day was the 200 meter dash. Day finished fourth in her heat and seventh overall with a time of 24.26 to earn 956 points. Nwaba won her heat with a time of 24.33 seconds to earn 949 points.
Day is trying to make her second USA Olympics team. The 27 year old competed in the women's high jump in Beijing. Day set a new personal record of 6,337 points earlier this year at the Sam Adams Meet at Westmont College to meet the Olympic A standard of 6,150 points.
Nwaba is still trying to meet the Olympic A Standard of 6,150 points to become eligible for a spot on the US Olympic Team. Nwaba's career high in the heptathlon is 5,927.
The heptathlon concludes Saturday with the long jump, javelin and 800 meter run. The top three finishers, who have meet the Olympic A standard, will represent the U.S. In London.
