A man competing in the SLO Triathlon today is alive after being found unresponsive in the pool during the event.
This morning, the San Luis Obispo City Fire Department responded to an emergency medical call at Sinsheimer Pool where the event was being held.
Emergency personnel arrived to find city-staffed lifeguards, off-duty medical personnel and the patient's family performing CPR on the unresponsive swimmer, who was not breathing and did not have a pulse.
According to lifeguards, they removed the person from the pool after they noticed he had become unresponsive while swimming during the triathlon. Additionally, an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) that is maintained on site was retrieved and applied early to the unresponsive person by lifeguards before the firefighters and paramedics initiated Advanced Life Support measures.
The swimmer, who was transported to French Hospital Medical Center for further evaluation and treatment, is currently in stable condition at the hospital.
