42 year old San Luis Obispo resident Barb Singer-Lemoine will compete against the best triathletes in the country on Saturday. Singer-Lemoine will swim, bike and run at the USA Olympic Distance Triathlon in Burlington, Vermont.
Singer-Lemoine earned a trip to Nationals by winning her age group at the Wildflower Triathlon at Lake San Antonio. The National competition will be the culmination of a long journey back from a destructive lifestyle for the single mother.
"Seven years ago my life was completely different. I had problems with drugs and alcohol" said Singer-Lemoine who works full time at Kennedy Club Fitness.
"What I learned is we are capable of a lot more than we sometimes give ourselves credit for. what I know now is a small taste of success. And that's different for everybody can go a long way" said Singer-Lemoine.
Singer-Lemoine says she has put her partying lifestyle behind her and has been drug and alcohol free for seven years.
If she finishes in the top 18 out of more than a hundred women in her age group (40-44) she will have a chance to compete at Worlds. The triathlon will start with a nearly one mile long lake swim. The competitors will then bike 24.8 miles (40 kilometers) and run 6.2 miles (10 kilometers.)
