Grover Beach city council approved the first reading of the proposed ordinance on Tuesday to stop smokers from lighting up in parks or on adjacent sidewalks but the city must adopted it at the next city council meeting for it to go into affect.
Under the initial proposed ordinance, smokers would have been allowed to smoke near the Transit Center on the south side of the park.
This area is used by drivers and passengers who smoke while waiting for the bus. Police say it would be hard and into enforce the law in this area due to the high population of smokers in this area. Several members of the public told the city council that they also wait for buses at the site and don't like breathing the secondhand smoke.
As a result, the council agreed to eliminate the exemption for smoking at the bus stop.
If approved at the Aug. 6 council meeting, the ban will become effective Sept. 5.
