LOS ANGELES (AP) - A Los Angeles suburb has declared a state of local emergency in a bid to spark faster cleanup of oil-tainted soil under hundreds of homes.
The Torrance Daily Breeze says the Carson City Council approved the declaration Monday. Officials will ask the governor and other state officials to demand immediate cleanup of the Carousel neighborhood.
The resolution says methane and benzene are present under some 300 homes that were built in the 1960s on top of a former Shell tank farm.
Los Angeles County health and fire officials say there's no imminent danger to residents but property owners disagree.
Shell was ordered to clean up the site two years ago and a plan is in the works but residents and city officials say it's taking too long.
