LANCASTER, Calif. (AP) - Los Angeles County prosecutors have charged a Palmdale man with murder in the death of a 2-year-old girl for allegedly leading sheriff's deputies in a high-speed chase that ended with a crash into a car carrying the child.
Forty-five-year-old Marvin Travon Hicks pleaded not guilty Monday afternoon to murder and one other felony, evading an officer causing injury. A judge set his bail at $1.1 million and scheduled a preliminary hearing for Dec. 19.
The district attorney's office says Hicks drove at speeds up to 100 mph as he tried to flee deputies last Thursday. Two-year-old Madison Faye Ruano was killed in the ensuing collision and her mother, Tina Marie Ruano, was seriously injured.
Hicks faces up to life in prison if convicted.
