A solar project planned in the California Valley is one step closer to reality.

The Environmental Impact Report (EIR) for the California Valley Solar Ranch project, to be located in the Carrizo Plains, was issued Thursday. Now, the project is in the public comment phase.

Issuing the EIR makes San Luis Obispo County one of the first counties in the United States to prepare such a report for a large-scale solar facility. The 250-megawatt solar panel project would cover nearly 1,900 acres of the Carrizo Plains if approved.

Now, residents have 45-days to comment on the EIR and the project. That allows the company behind the project, SunPower, time to respond to each of the comments and revise the EIR. That final EIR goes on to the San Luis Obispo County Planning Commission.

The process could take until February of 2011.
