Women who are married while pregnant are less likely to experience domestic abuse, use drugs or suffer postpartum depression.
Researchers in Canada looked at surveys filled out by more than 6,000 women.
They found one in five pregnant women who lived with their partner experienced some form of abuse or depression, as well as two-thirds of women who had separated from their partner the year before giving birth.
Experts say the number of births to unmarried women is on the rise, and this study could help them make sure mothers are remaining healthy during their pregnancy.
