Son of former CHP official sentenced for rape

FRESNO, Calif. (AP) - The son of a former California Highway Patrol assistant chief has been sentenced to 35 years to life in state prison for raping a housekeeper at knifepoint in 2011.

The Fresno Bee reports prosecutors called for a longer term at the sentencing hearing Tuesday for 21-year-old Spencer Scarber. He could have faced up to 80 years.

Prosecutors said Scarber never showed remorse or took responsibility for his crime.

Scarber crossed the border into Mexico in December 2012 just days before he was convicted in absentia on rape, robbery and burglary charges.

His capture in Acapulco led to the arrest of his parents, Kyle and Gail Scarber, and sister, Crystal Reynoso, on charges of aiding his escape. Their trials are pending.

Kyle Scarber was an assistant chief with the CHP's Central Division.
